‘My name is Sarah, I am 23 and I have Asperger Syndrome. When I was little, my mum taught me to knit, sew and do cross stitch to help calm me down. A few months ago we joined a sewing class called ‘A Stitch In Time’, where we do community and charity projects and upcycling and I have made some lovely new friends there.
At the group, our teacher got us involved in a project called ‘Little Dresses for Africa’. We make the dresses out of pillowcases, and I love it so much that I have made 63 dresses so far. Over the years I have always felt sad whenever friends were doing things for charity like sponsored walks or runs, as I cannot do those things. So I was so happy that there was something I could actually do.
I have also set up a fundraising page to pay for all of the supplies I need, and use EasyFundraising, which generates a small donation for everything I buy. This money then goes directly to the Little Dresses for Africa charity, to help cover postage. We get donations of the actual pillowcases from family, friends and freecycle, so that saves money and makes good use of items which are no longer needed. The UK Ambassador for the charity is so impressed with me that she wants me to get more involved with it.
I also make other items which I can hopefully sell and possibly start my own little business, to raise more funds for the charity.’
What a great cause. If anyone has any pillowcases that they would like to give to Sarah, please get in touch with her on her Facebook page, ‘
In Stitches With Aspergers‘.
